Competing in his second year at the University of Guelph, Lively's Ross Proudfoot ran his way into the record books.
This weekend at the SPIRE NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Invitational in Geneva, Ohio, Proudfoot recorded the third fastest CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) 3,000-metre race in CIS history.
The Track North alum blazed his way to a finishing time of 7:57. 46 to earn a silver medal.
Guelph teammate Alex Genest held off the hardcharging Proudfoot to claim the gold in the race.
Early in the race, Proudfoot held back in the middle of the pack, but he made a move in the final kilometre.
"I felt really comfortable running in the middle of the pack for the first half of the race and moved up with the Top 5 with about 900 metres to go," Proudfoot said. "When they rang the bell for the final lap, I knew I could break eight minutes and I made a huge move to catch all of the lead group, except for Genest."
Proudfoot attributed his success during the weekend to his training, which is paying dividends.
"My training has been going really well this past month and my race times are dropping accordingly," he said.
Track North coach Darren Jermyn praised Proudfoot for the achievement of breaking the eight-minute barrier.
"Breaking eight minutes for three kilometres is one of those mystical barriers for athletes at any age," he said. "For Ross to do this at the age of 19 is truly outstanding. For some perspective, this time is equivalent to running five kilometres in 13 minutes and 45 seconds."
Proudfoot's next competition is the Ontario University Athletics Indoor Track and Field Championships, which will be held Feb. 24-25 at York University.
